5 Things You Should Know If You're Planning to Visit Matacanes
The Matacanes Canyon, considered one of the best places in all of Mexico for canyoning, is located in the Magical Town of Santiago. This natural wonder features waterfalls, caves, and underground rivers, all with stunning turquoise waters.
It’s an incredibly fun yet equally challenging activity that attracts tourists from all over the world every year. So if you’re planning to explore them with one of our tour operators, here are a few things you need to know before setting off on your adventure.

What does the tour involve?
This hike takes between 8 and 10 hours for participants aged 12 and older. It is recommended that you be in good physical condition, as the hike includes:
- Two rappels of 15 and 27 meters
- Two underground rivers
- More than 20 waterfalls ranging from 1 to 12 meters in height
- Natural slides

Seasons
The canyon has water year-round, but to explore it properly, there needs to be a good flow. The months with the highest water flow and the most stable temperatures for exploring are from March through September, so keep that in mind when planning your visit.
Clothing
Although it’s a water activity, it’s best to wear clothing that isn’t too absorbent. You can do it in swim trunks, shorts, or compression tights.
Your footwear should be sturdy, preferably slip-resistant, as the surfaces may be uneven and regular sneakers might not hold up.
Don't worry about safety gear—our tour operators will provide it, and sometimes they even have wetsuits to make the tour easier. Check with the tour operator of your choice before your tour.
