The Estadio Universitario, also known as El Volcán, is the home stadium of Tigres UANL, a soccer team in Mexico’s First Division. With a capacity of 42,000 spectators, it is located in the heart of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León campus in the metropolitan municipality of San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León. The stadium was inaugurated on May 30, 1967, with a match between CF Monterrey and Atlético de Madrid, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The first goal was scored by Mariano Ubiracy. The Estadio Universitario is known worldwide because the “La Ola” phenomenon became popular there during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. The idea originated with the University Board of Trustees, whose president was the prominent businessman Manuel L. Barragán. Final supervision of the project was handled by engineers Juventino Gutiérrez (contractor) and Gerardo Torres (supervisor); the cost was 23 million pesos. Initially, the stadium was designed to hold 90,000 people, but due to financial constraints, the plan had to be scaled back.
As part of its state-of-the-art technology, this sports arena features one of the largest screens in Latin America, measuring 12.48 meters wide by 8.60 meters high, as well as 25 CCTV cameras that record everything that happens both on and off the court.
Today, it’s also known as “Mexico’s most passionate stadium” thanks to Tigres’ incomparable fan base, which never stops supporting and cheering on the team.
