Giselle is a classical ballet in two acts that tells the tragic story of a young peasant girl who, upon falling in love with a nobleman disguised as a villager, discovers the betrayal that will change her fate. In the first act, Giselle dies of a broken heart upon learning the true identity of Albrecht, her beloved who is engaged to another woman. In the second act, transformed into a spirit, Giselle joins the realm of the Wilis—the souls of betrayed brides—but her pure love manages to protect Albrecht from eternal punishment. A sublime work about love, betrayal, and forgiveness, with original choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli, a libretto by Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Gautier, and music by Adolphe Adam.
