Just 36 kilometers from the city, specifically in Santiago, lies a place of great ecological, historical, and cultural significance. La Cueva de la Boca, also known as “Agapito Treviño’s Cave” or, as we all call it, THE BAT CAVE, is a massive cavern nestled in the heart of nature.
In ancient times, this place was a mine; it is now closed, but it remains the subject of several legends. The most popular one tells of gold hidden by a notorious thief named Agapito Treviño, who terrorized the wealthy residents of Monterrey in the 19th century and whose hideout was inside this cave.
The important thing to remember is that the cave is a sanctuary for bats; it is estimated that more than 5 million bats of over 6 different species live there. These animals, though often unpopular, are actually absolutely essential to protecting the ecosystem.
We recommend visiting the cave any time of year. The main entrance is just past the Boca Dam, in the "Pueblo Mágico" town of Santiago, and you can see it from the highway.
In this spot, surrounded by scenic views and lookout points, you can go for a walk or simply sit by the river and enjoy nature—listening to the sound of the water and the wind rustling through the trees. To be honest, it’s very relaxing and a great option if you’re looking to escape the city for a while.
Of course, while you're there, you can take the opportunity to stroll through the town's main square or the Cavazos neighborhood, and enjoy everything Santiago has to offer with your family.
