San Francisco Cañas Valley, named for the strong Franciscan missionary presence. A place of springs surrounded by reeds and sugarcane. In a decree signed by Acting Governor Don Agapito García on May 31, 1851, the Hacienda de San Francisco de Cañas was granted the name it would bear under the Organic Law of Municipalities: the “Municipality of Mina, N.L.”, in honor of Francisco Javier Mina, a Spanish-born leader from Navarre who fought for Mexico’s freedom.
It borders Bustamante and the state of Coahuila to the north; García and the state of Coahuila to the south; Bustamante, Villaldama, Salinas Victoria, and Hidalgo to the east; and the state of Coahuila to the west.
