In 1989, with the support of the Institute of Anthropology and History, restoration and renovation work began on the historic building to transform it into the Glass Museum, always respecting the architectural styles of the period and preserving the original building materials, including bricks, mosaic floors, wooden planks, staircases, and the four iron columns that reinforced the structure.
Following this preparatory work, a multidisciplinary team of museum designers, researchers, and architects was tasked with developing and implementing the museum design project. Finally, in 1992, with three floors of exhibition space for its permanent collection, the Glass Museum opened its doors to the public with the mission of rescuing, preserving, and disseminating the history of glass in Mexico, as well as promoting a culture of appreciation for glass and encouraging artistic production using this material.
