The new town is named Parás, in honor of José María Parás y Ballesteros, the first constitutional governor of the state of Nuevo León.
Parás is located in the northwestern region of the state; its geographical coordinates are 26°30′ north latitude, and its elevation above sea level is 165 meters, making it one of the municipalities with the lowest elevation above sea level. It borders the state of Tamaulipas to the north and east; the municipality of Agualeguas to the south; and the municipality of Vallecillo, Nuevo León, to the west.
